THE state government plans to organise an e-sports championship dubbed “Johor Mentri Besar Esport Tournament” through the Johor Sports Council.

This is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the e-sports foundation in the state.

Johor tourism, youth and sports committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the competition would be held during the first quarter of this year and focus on nurturing future e-sports enthusiasts.“This is one of the things the government is venturing into as e-sports has become the latest trend among youths.

“We want to provide them with the best environment.

“The plan is already in motion upon approval by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Sukan Makmur Orang Muda Johor PUBG Grand Final in Paradigm Mall Johor Baru.

He added that at the state level, they would first focus on building local talent.

“The championship will be a catalyst for e-sports in the state.

“We are also looking for sponsors who can help attract more youths to participate,” he said.

Onn Hafiz said the state government was also discussing with industry players to develop an e-sports hub in the state.

“We have met with some of the industry players to see if there is potential and we have been looking at some possible venues.

“But I believe we can go beyond e-sports and grow the IT industry as a whole,” he said.
